all governments and international Institutions do fund NGO.
EU collaborates with NGO which support official european policies.
EU funds/budget stem from its « EU own ressources » (not national ones).
In cases of misuse of EU subventions, appropriate EU control bodies exist to take necessary counter-measures.
EU Commission participation in public debates held in the EP or in public member states bodies is legitimate - and regulated by appropriate guidelines.
I am not aware of any official/legal incrimination of ex-Commissioner Tindemans.
« Faustian Pact » is a good journalistic catch-word but an excessive (inappropriate ?) one in this specific case.
The EU is not sovereign State but an intergovernmental organization. The EU own ressources are peanuts compared to member state's contributions. The EU's moneys are member states moneys.
OLAF is a joke, We've seen that with the Covid Vaccine's sourcing (and many other cases of corruption, rife in all EU institution at all levels).
It is illegal for the European Commission to subvert political debate through NGOs and lobby the EP and Member States. The EC is not the decision making body of the EU, which is the Council. None of its competencies.
The EC is the epitome of a useless bureaucracy gone amok. Must be shut down. So do the EP and the EUCJ. We don't need them to run a custom union and common policies.
Sorry but we are not saying that the support of the European Commission and the European institutions for NGOs is not in their missions. I re-quote the article: "Let us clarify that this is in no way a question of lobbying or the financing of NGOs, as Timmermans puts forward for his (bad) defense. But of ethics, of a more than doubtful mixture of genres, of corruption and embezzlement".
Well, using EU funds stemming from member states to fund militant NGOs in order to subvert the political debate at the EU Parliament and in member states is illegal. It is corruption. And Timmermans is so problematic that he was passed over for EC president job in 2018.

Afuera!!!
"Corruption scandal" ? The excessive wording of this article is self depreciating.
The personal attack against a former commissioner is misplaced.
The communication activity of the Commission as well as EU's institutions support of NGO fall well into their missions.
Systemic and brutal accusations do not help.

We are calling a spade a spade.
